Xsyon Mercenaries and Me

I have talked a little about joining the Xsyon Mercenaries guild in the MMO game of Xsyon. So I wanted to talk a little about this Guild, or Tribe as they are called in Xsyon. The Xsyon Mercenaries or XM for short. By the name Mercenaries, You get the feel of what type of Tribe this is, Or was when it was first came to be. Xsyon is a sandbox MMO and as so will have lot’s of PvP in it, So the founding fathers and mother of the tribe thought it would be cool to play Merc’s in the game. And the Tribe still feels that way, But more than that, We all know it’s going to take a lot more than just PvP to play this game. And so as the game comes closer to adding a patch that most of us hope will bring back a good chunk of the old members of the tribe and a lot more people playing the game. We, That is to say XM and I are starting to gear up for what we hope will be a boom to the pop of Xsyon. You may or may not know that I can’t seem to leave good enough along, And always find a spot in the leadership of most any guilds I join. just something about me that makes me want to be apart of the leadership. So here I am again, But it’s not a bad thing, I like being apart of creating something great. That’s where we are now, Working out what XM will be, How it will work, And the basic idea of XM. If you wanted to short cut it, this would be a few minute talk, But that’s not us. We want to make sure we understand what we will be and why that is. I feel and I’m sure other leaders feel the same way. It’s building off of solid rock foundation that will make the tribe last. The tree can sway, But the root’s must be planted deep so to speak. Now XM will be more than just Merc’s out looking for a fast gold piece, It will be a full on tribe with all the works. PvP, Crafting, Hunting, Farming, Taming, Trading, And all the rest. There will be something for every one to be apart of. This is when I find the tribe the most fun, When your hammering out how and what things will be. And then seeing it grow into what you all talked about so many months before.

OK so as things go with Xsyon and the Xsyon Mercenaries tribe I will let you all know here, Like last night I think one of our members has started a small war with another tribe.  Good times.

Dusting off the old blog as I start playing Xsyon again.

Hey, Hi, and Hello again!

It’s been a long time, Way to long, But there are reasons for that. non that I will get into here, Well maybe one. Burn out, And not just on games. I’m talking most of any thing to do online. It was as if I hit a wall, And I could not find fun in anything I tried to do. I have been gaming and online for a long time now, And I have taken small breaks from time to time. But this time I had to walk away from almost all of it for a few months. But I’m back now, And finding fun again.

Burn Out

After wanting to build a kick but gaming rig for years and years this year I did. Two years ago, I think it was, My old, Even for back then, Desk top died on me. It was never anything you would call a gaming rig, But it let me play most anything I wanted, Even if I did have to lower the setting way down in the game to play it. So this year I said to myself, You know there is a lot I could do with that TAX money I’m getting back, But dang it I’m going to do what I want and not what I should do. This may come back and bite me on the butt later. But I did it!  OK I didn’t build it myself, I had my younger brother pick it all out for me and build it. But it was my money, And this my blog so I’m going to say I built a gaming rig. And it’s nice, What few games I have put on it, I can run full-out high setting and still have high frame rates. This by it self maybe one of the reasons I’m having fun again.

After my desktop died two years ago, I ran out and got a laptop, My reasons for buying a laptop was two-fold. I want something now and didn’t want to wait a week or more, And I have been wanting a laptop for a long time. So I saw this as something I could do and be back online and playing, And also have a laptop for trips. Something that I really wanted. Funny thing is I have not went anywhere sence I had the laptop. And on top of that, Because I wanted something NOW!!! and could not wait a week or so to order and put together a gaming rig, Heck just an OK desk top. I went out and got a laptop that I had the money for. Not the best way to go shopping for a computer, Laptop or desk top, Bad move all together.

So for the next two years I have been stuck trying to play MMO’s on a laptop that was way under stect for really any game that was not browser-based. It even had a hard time with Wurm Online, And that’s bad, If you don’t know what I mean. Go check out the game on YouTube, And you will see what I mean. It has been like walking up to a wall and just standing there bashing my head into the wall over and over. This helped because after beating your head on a wall, Your eyes sight goes all blurry and you don’t see the game so framed this way. For real, It was hard trying to learn to play games this way, But MMO’s was what I did to relax. I don’t go clubbing, drinking, or anything really. So what do you do when your only outlet to relax is taken away from you. You find away around it some how. For me, It was learning to play games that almost looked like a slide show because the frame rates would get so bad.

Bad frame rates was not the only reason for burn out, It was a big part of it for sure, But not the only reason. Just before my desktop died on me I was told about a little MMO game called Xsyon. So I looked into it and fell in love with it before I could ever even play it. As things went on the members of Xsyon started make guilds, Tribe as they are called in Xsyon. So I hooked up with this one tribe called Hopi, It seemed like the best thing to do, As I had no wish to make my own tribe that would have sounded a lot like Hopi. Almost from the start of joining the tribe the creator of the tribe and I started butting heads. Stuff like he wanted a ten man tribe, And I saw a ten man tribe as a tribe that would only have one or two people playing at best. I have been in small and large based guilds and I understand the number games of what member count and active players mean. Other things came up two, But it was more or less always about the members count that we butted heads about. So as time went on the leader of our small tribe played less and less. Now this was for one reason only, There was not much to do in Xsyon. He found other games to play, Any way at one point I knew he was not coming back, So I started pushing the other’s in the guild to pick a new leader. I wanted to know some one was running this thing. But no one seemed to care so I left Hopi for the first time. Joining a very active tribe, At lest at that time they was. Mean time back at Hopi they went into Oh Crap mode. One of the most active in-game and on the forums people left the tribe(Me). They freaked out and almost over night started to get active. Mean time the very active tribe I was in had a full guild burn out and went to another game. And from what I understand, They are still there and having fun in that other game. So with hat in hand I went back to Hopi, Can I please rejoin Hopi. So they let me back in the tribe.

I think of this as Hopi part two of a three-part Hopi saga. As I rejoined my friends I find out that they did have a new leader, And plans was being made. Let me stop here and say that this was one of the reasons I left, Everything I did to try to get people active and make plans went without anyone even acting as if I had said anything. So now this was happening, Plan’s, Active players, People to talk to and play with. Good times, Till our new leader fell off the map. One day she was there and making plans and the next nothing. Dang it!!! I was starting to think there was some type of cures for us using the Hopi tribe name. So a month or two and no word, Then out of the blue she pops up on the Xsyon leadership forums telling us she had been sick and to give her a few days and she would be back again. Let mes top here again, And say that this was the last time I have seen anything from her. I have no idea what ever happen to her. Now we are without a leader again, So we start talking about it, Or should I say I started talking about it. Pushing and pushing for us to pick a new leader. Let me point out that I was not trying to become the leader, I was find letting other’s lead as long as they kelp us going and not just sitting around waiting for other stuff to happen in-game.

So they picked me to be leader, Wait that’s not right, They picked me to be the to lead to one of our other leaders returned. I told them that they need to think real hard on this. Because I knew what I wanted and if I had the power I would do it. And do it I did, We grew, and grew, To we was the biggest tribe in Xsyon. The game was going live, Or so we thought, Check out my blog to read that story. Any way tons of people and fun happening all around. Now remember that I’m playing on a laptop that hates Xsyon. Not that that mattered much at all. As most my time was spent dealing with guild drama. Hopi grew way to fast. I was spending hours just dealing with PM’s of what he said, what she said type of things. Other tribes wanting in on how many people we had active, And others’ that just wanted to troll us. I worked hard to keep things from getting out of hand, But they did. So I added new leaders to the mix to help on work load. The two guy’s I pick was not bad guy’s they just didn’t see the tribe the same way I did. And I didn’t know that when I gave them the power. As I backed off to take a small break they took over all parts of the tribe and by the time I knew what was going on the Hopi I knew and loved was no long there any more. In two weeks I went from the leader of the biggest tribe in Xsyon to walking away from it altogether.

This was also about the time that I was hitting that burn out wall, Because all this took about a year and a half to happen. So this was not an over night thing that happen. I tried taking small breaks and coming back, But with real life things happen and the thought of what had just happen in my MMO home. I just walked away.

So I don’t know if this is the start of me blogging once a week or still once ever so often. But this is a new start. I’m happy online and in-game again, I’m with a small tribe and having fun again. Xsyon Mercenaries is a great tribe and I have high hopes for it. So till the next we talk, Have a great weekend

Xsyon: Game launch…*cough…Again

Game launch day finally was at hand, After waiting a year from when the game was to go live into Prelude. The day finally was here, And I was at work working doubles that week. Watching everything through the text of my tribe mates in our tribal website live chat. This was not reading good, Lot’s of words I don’t think I would like to type here. After hours and hours of reading that it kelp being pushed back later and later til it went live when I was driving home. Pacing back and forth as I waited for the game to download, And then the time came to log in. We was hammered with 30 minute lag, with lag spikes even higher. For hours we waged war in a horrific epic battle pitting man versus lag. We really had no chance, Lag was to strong, Lag seemed to be everywhere at once and no one could stand up to the lag. In the end we laid in a corner crying out to our mothers to console us and tell us all will be OK again. And the game came crashing down around us. We lost to many good gamers on that night. As the days and night roll on it almost felt like a bad dream. Until you walk past the field of honor and see all the grave makers of the lost loved ones that we’ll never see in-game again.

In the week we was morning our losses, That seemed to still be growing. The Dev Team worked hard to fix things as fast as the could. After a little more than a week we was going for another game launch. This time things much better. The lag was still their but no where like it was before. Yes it made thing mind numbing, Not sure frustrating covers how many of us felt. But we did what we had to do. In the middle of all this all the tribe kelp having to drop their totems for their tribal lands. Mean time you had the gaming troll’s doing everything they could to take your area before you could. Just because that’s the type of thing they do. Any way Hopi (The tribe I’m in) was able to grab our area time and time again. We are set now and building up our area. The lag is almost gone, And the real game is there to be played.

After two game launches and three totem drops, The game is now up and running as it should be, Yea there still a little lag from time to time but no more than you would expect from any game without a login queue.

Xsyon: Q&A with Jooky of Notorious Games

1) How would you like to be called? Is there any name that you wish to be known as?

Jooky is alright.

2) How did you get the name Jooky?

It happened randomly. Many years ago when I was setting up my first email address I wanted to use my first name. That was taken so instead I chose the first thing that popped into my head that was similar to my name… for some reason that was ‘Jooky’ and it stuck.

A few years later those Jooky soda commercials came out which made my nickname more recognizable and funny to people.

3) What all do you do at Notorious Games?

I am the sole designer, lead programmer, manager and primary art director. So basically I do too much!

4) How or what made you want to make Xsyon?

Ever since I played Dungeons and Dragons as a kid and first heard of computers I imagined in the future that players would connect to a online world where some players created and lived in the world while others adventured in it and most did a little of both.

When Ultima Online came out I saw a glimpse of what I had imagined and I was inspired to put together the first documents for Apocalypse (the original title for Xsyon) with the help of one of my business partners back then.

The opportunity to finally bring this game to life came 3 ½ years ago when I was able to get enough funding to start this project. With just enough to run a small team, I knew I had to keep things simple, so Xsyon Prelude is just the beginning.

5) Has the making of Xsyon been every thing you thought it would be?

Unfortunately, no. The biggest problem has been a struggle with programmers. For the first two years of development I primarily directed things and trusted that the code was stable and optimized thoroughly. On the surface it appeared to be so and features were getting implemented quickly. I put a lot of faith in the original team, which is necessary when working with such a small group.

As I announced the launch nearly a year ago we suddenly realized that what appeared to working well on the surface was riddled with problems. The original programmers were replaced and the bulk of these past 9 months has been spent in rewriting major portions of the code with a revolving set of coders. Most of the programming this year has been handled by myself and one other programmer.

6) When I first found Xsyon back in March (2010) you was wanting the launch of the game to be small, And for it to be more like a grassroots type of game. Do you still feel the same way now?
Yes, I do. We are still planning a small official launch and a game that will respond to and evolve with the community. Xsyon Prelude is still the first step.
On the Home page of the Xsyon website it says there will be many benevolent gods, The seven seals are about to be broken, The Four Horsemen loom over the land awaiting their chance to spread destruction and chaos. It goes on to say that Devils and angels vie for control of their earthly battlefield.

7) How many gods are we talking about?

In the Prelude, the God of the Bible and gods associated with the Washoe nation.
8 ) How big of a part will the gods play in our day-to-day lives?

This will depend on the player.

9) With Xsyon sounding something like a hybrid between fantasy and apocalypse, Will Xsyon be a magic heavy game later?

I am planning to evolve the world to be something like in Arcanum, where there is a balance of magic and technology, but keeping things primitive for a while.

10) How far are you willing to push human technology in the game? War machines, Buildings, Agriculture.

Again, probably to the level of Arcanum. Xsyon will remain more of a fantasy then a sci-fi world, though as things progress I would like to see if different areas of the world evolve in different ways, some focused on tech, others focused on spiritual magic, both equally powerful.

A main goal with the game is to provide the tools and the setting, see what players do with them and evolve the world accordingly. We’ve already been doing that this year as the terraforming and tribe rank system and plan to do this soon with the combat system.

11) Will Xsyon always be a seamless gaming world? Or will we see zoning(loading screens) when you start adding new lands from around the world to the game?

Eventually there will be loading screens between some areas, though the world will be divided into large seamless zones such as the current Prelude Zone.

12) What kind of mutant animals can we expect to see?

The current in game creatures (bear, deer, coyotes, raccoons) have several mutant versions. We will be adding many creatures for launch and they will all eventually have mutant versions.

13) With this being a game set in the apocalypse will there be zombies? And if so, Are they more animal or NPC?

Yes, zombies will arise sometime during the Prelude. They will be NPC monsters with full visible loot (armor and weapons).

14) Will we see boats in the game at some point? And if so, How big will you make them? Could a raiding party be able to be all in the same ship?

They are planned, but a ways off. We’ll start with small rafts and canoes and then barges large enough for a small raiding party (10-20 players). Anything larger will be saved for much later when the world expands beyond the current Prelude area (the Prelude area is 40×40 km, most of which is currently covered by the deadly green mist.

Thank you Jooky for your time and answers.

Xsyon review (As the game is now 16 April 2010)

First, The game is more like beta than any thing right now, That is not to say it’s bad. There is just so few things in-game right now for us to do. I heard from a little bird that they are trying to get the terraforming done %100 before pushing more content onto the server. I have played around with the terraforming and it is very fun to play with. I have tried to see if there was a height limit to it, If there is I never hit it. Not to sure how high I got, but it took over a two seconds to fall all the way down to the ground. Not sure what all they are doing to it, But I would have to say they are working on the water part of terraforming. That is the one part that seems to have a little glitch.
From what I can remember you have 5 actions
1) Clear land
2) Make road (Have not did much of this, As I can’t seem to see the road under the snow.)
3) Flatten land (I think)
4) Raise the land (small mound of land)
5) Lower land (dig a small hole)

Have not done this but a few times, But cutting down trees, Is a blast. Just the fact that you see it fall’s and It also seems the tree’s fall in the direction that you cut it at. Umm what ever what ever way you are facing, Is the way it fall’s. That, Are I have been very lucky so far. Also After chopping down a tree you can jump up on it and run across it. This may come in handy when trying to get across a canyon or river. With Logging, I think that is what the skill is called, You have one action that will help with terraforming. You can grind the stump down, Making the land terraformable.
Let’s see you have like 4 actions for Logging
1) Grind stump
2) Cut down tree
3) Chop into small logs
4) Chop into large logs

Scavenging(sp) is not as fun as I thought it would be, But that may be because I have not found anything great yet. The skill for this seems to level up very slow, But I can see this being one of the big things that all Tribes will need members to do. You can not do this action more than once in the same area, I am sure there is a timer for this but I have not stay in one place testing the timer on it. After you look area the spot your standing on, You will need to move away from that spot before trying to find something again. I am sure I will love this skill and not want to do any other’s when I hit a big find, But for now, It’s something I try from time to time. One thing you need to know of this skill is that when the game is live, It’s the way the world will learn new things. Players can teach each other, But the knowledge comes from some one finding it first. This will also help Tribes(Thats what guilds are called in Xsyon) stay ahead of other tribes.

Have not tried much crafting yet, It seems simple for now, But with a lot of drag and drop to it. Like EVE, Fall Earth, and Wurm the players make all most every thing. It’s a little hard to tell ya how good are bad crafting will be as it’s not in-game. I think what we do have in-game was not ment to be there yet.  I think it was just easier to let it stay than to put man/woman hours into pulling it out.

I have tried for just a few minute on the hiding skill, I could see through myself, And I seem to be hunched over, And move slow. I can see this skill being slow to level as well. I think that because they know that there will be a lot of people who want to Pk will be using the hell out of that skill. So they will slow down how fast you can level that skill up. Any way as I was just standing there hunched over, In hide mode. Some one spawned in the game right by me and said I was stuck and he was going to hit me, So that I would not be stuck any more. I think he should have added a wink there. Any way that is how I had my first PVP fight. I went with the click fest on my mouse, Trying to use my defensive moves as much as I could. On my screen I did not get hurt at all, But some how I kill(or what ever you can do now) the other player. That was fun, But then I did win. I just found out that the PVP that is in the game now is not working really. And it is close to the top of (a very large) list of things to do.

Well, That’s about all I got right now, I have had a lot going on around the house and have been AFK in-game more than I have got to play. You can check out some of my video’s about Xsyon on my YouTube page. For what the game is, I am loving it. For what the game (I hope) will become, I am ecstatic.

There will be more to come.
